From changing material choices to increasingly specific colour and performance requirements, plastic manufacturers have a lot to consider in 2026.

At Eclipse Colours, the conversations we have with customers rarely start and end with “What colour do you need?”

The polymer being used, processing conditions, end application, performance requirements, lead times and consistency can all be just as important as the colour itself.

It’s interesting, then, to see some of these themes reflected in wider industry research.

According to Market Data Forecast, the European masterbatch market is estimated to be worth $4.22 billion in 2026 and is forecast to reach $6.21 billion by 2034.

But what does a changing masterbatch market actually mean for manufacturers?

Here are some of the areas we’re seeing and discussing with customers at Eclipse Colours.

Colour Is Still at the Heart of Masterbatch

With so much discussion around performance, additives and sustainability, it’s easy to forget just how important colour remains.

Market Data Forecast reports that colour masterbatch represented 46.1% of the European masterbatch market in 2025.

That certainly reflects our day-to-day work at Eclipse.

But achieving the right colour is about far more than identifying the closest shade.

A customer might come to us with a RAL or Pantone™ reference, an existing component or even a physical sample that needs to be replicated.

From there, we need to consider how that colour will actually behave in production.

Different polymers have different base colours and characteristics. Processing temperatures can influence pigments. The required addition rate, opacity and end application can all affect the finished result.

That’s why our approach to colour matching considers the customer’s production process, rather than treating colour as an isolated requirement.

The objective isn’t simply to produce a good laboratory match.

It’s to develop a PlastiCol™ masterbatch that delivers the required result when the customer puts it into production.

More Specific Requirements Need More Specific Solutions

Something we regularly encounter is just how different the requirements can be from one manufacturer to another.

Two customers might be processing the same type of polymer, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll need the same masterbatch solution.

One product could be manufactured for indoor use, while another needs to perform outdoors.

One customer might be producing a relatively small run where exact brand colour is the priority. Another could be producing high volumes where batch-to-batch consistency is critical.

Processing equipment and conditions can vary too.

This is why we believe asking the right questions at the beginning of a project is so important.

What polymer are you using?

What are you manufacturing?

How are you processing it?

What does the finished product need to achieve?

The answers give our technical team a much better understanding of what the masterbatch needs to do.

Sometimes Masterbatch Needs to Do More Than Add Colour

Colour might be in our name, but appearance isn’t the only consideration when developing a masterbatch.

Depending on the application, manufacturers may require additional functionality from their plastic products.

For example, a product intended for outdoor use may require consideration of UV exposure.

In other applications, controlling static build-up may be important. Anti-static additives can be used where appropriate to help reduce surface static and associated effects such as dust attraction or products sticking together.

Other applications can have entirely different performance requirements.

For us, this means looking at the finished product as a whole.

Rather than asking only “What should it look like?”, it’s worth asking:

“What does it need to do?”

Colour and functional requirements can then be considered together when developing the appropriate masterbatch solution.

Consistency Doesn’t Stop at Colour

When we talk about consistency, it’s natural to think about producing the same shade from one batch to the next.

But there’s another side to consistency that matters to manufacturers:

Reliable supply.

A technically excellent masterbatch isn’t much help if it isn’t available when a customer’s production schedule requires it.

That’s why we’ve continued to invest in Eclipse Colours beyond our colour laboratory.

Our move to larger premises doubled our site size and gave us increased warehouse capacity. We’ve also invested in machinery, stockholding and supplier relationships to help us provide the responsive service our customers require.

For us, technical performance and dependable supply go hand in hand.

What Does the Future of Masterbatch Look Like?

Market forecasts can give us an indication of where an industry is heading, but our focus remains on what manufacturers need from us today.

And increasingly, those requirements aren’t viewed in isolation.

Colour needs to work with the polymer.

The formulation needs to work with the production process.

Performance needs to suit the end application.

And supply needs to fit the customer’s production schedule.

That’s why we take a consultancy-led approach to masterbatch manufacturing.

Whether it’s developing a new colour, working with a challenging polymer, incorporating additional functionality or helping solve an issue in production, our starting point is understanding what the customer is trying to achieve.

Because getting the colour right matters.

Getting it right in production matters even more.
